Scientists around the world are measuring disturbing trends. It is very clear from the data that humans are in deep shit. Currently we are living through the planet’s 6th mass extinction event. The ecosystems upon which we depend are retreating as humans take over more and more of the Earth.
Scientists and leading environmental organizations like the Global Footprint Network, BioRegional and WWF have shown that we are currently using 3 planet’s worth of resources every year. This ecological debt manifests as collapsing fish stocks, disappearing rainforests, the loss of biodiversity and ever growing climate risk. The only solution is to use radically less resources. This is a sobering thought when you consider that the population is set to increase to 9 billion by 2050. Human civilization needs to change radically and fundamentally. This will affect everyone everywhere.
Currently the rate of change in society is nowhere near fast enough to ensure the survival of the human race and established institutions are proving a hindrance to the urgently required shift. As people around the world wake up to this disturbing reality they are taking matters into their own hands. In the last few decades there has been an unprecedented proliferation of grass roots organizations working not for financial gain but for people and planet. This unparalleled civil society mobilization recognizes that we do not have time to wait for governments to lead or for a magic technological solution. It is down to us… we need to change. Even this is not enough. To get the scale of change required we all need to turn into activists and get our friends, neighbours and the bloke in the pub to get on it too. That’s why I started this site.
Whatever you like doing: writing, taking photos, singing, sport, socializing; digging up roads, climbing trees… now is the time to do it for the Big Mother. There is no time to wait for someone to give you permission to act. Our civilization is like the Titanic heading for an imminent collision. The business leaders and politicians at the helm do not want to change. We have to seize control of the vessel and head for open water.
We will succeed; because we have to. The industrial age must die. Rather than weeping for this dinosaur we can celebrate the birth of the ecological age. Let’s keep it fun, edgy and sexy and change people’s perception of Eco. It’s time to blow the cobwebs away, be bold and brave and co-create the future we want. People are scared of change so we have to show how an ecological /sustainable society will be a safer, happier and more fulfilling place in which to live. It’s not just about doing what’s right. It’s about creating a better world for everyone.
